Fast and Creative Solution for Organizing that Junk Drawer

Everyone has one, right?  A junk drawer.  Or maybe you have two, or three, or seven of them…  Our junk drawer is in our kitchen.  Is it full of useful things?  Yes, all sorts.  Is it a complete mess?  Yep, always has been. Here is what it has pretty much always looked like.

Why is that?  Why is the junk drawer always so…junky.  Maybe we should rename it, although the “drawer-full-of-useful-stuff-that-doesn’t-really-have-a-home” just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

Well, I recently (as in, last week) got my junk drawer organized for, quite possibly, the first time ever.  The solution was so simple, and it literally only took me about 10 minutes.

We celebrated my daughter’s second birthday earlier this month.  (Weird segue, I know, but stay with me.)  As with any gift giving holiday, there was a fair amount of (re)organizing that needed to be done after it was over.  One of the gifts that she received was this set of wooden magnetic dress-up princesses.

After taking the plastic wrapping off, I realized that there was no lid for it, in order to keep the pieces contained.  So, I found a different container (with a lid) laying around my house that I could keep all of the pieces in.

Originally, I was just going to toss the little wooden frame in the recycle bin.  Fortunately though, I started to think, instead, of where I could potentially use it around the house.  All of my desk drawers already have drawer organizers, so that was out.  Then, it hit me.

The junk drawer.

So, here’s what I did.

Let’s review where I started.

Not a pretty site…

First, take everything out of the drawer, and group like items together.  (Why in the world do I have so many bottle brushes?!  And no one in my house is a golfer…)

Seriously, how did all of this fit into that little drawer?!

Next, throw away anything that is broken or just simply trash.

As you can see, my former-toy-case-turned-drawer-organizer didn’t quite fill up the entire drawer.  It still worked splendidly though.  I highly recommend a drawer organizer for things like this, if you don’t already have one.  It makes maintaining the organization so much easier.

Finally, only put back the items that you use regularly in the room that the junk drawer is in.

There may still be some items leftover once this is finished.  I had a couple of kitchen items that I put in more suitable drawers.  I also had a few items that weren’t trash or donation, but they didn’t really belong in the kitchen.  So, they were found new homes, in more appropriate rooms.

Voila!  So much better.

My husband went to toss something in the junk drawer later that day, and I said “Nope” right as he opened the drawer.  He looked inside and simply said, “Whoa.”  Haha!

Happy organizing!
