Is a Closet System Really Worth It?

Are you debating whether a closet system is really worth it or not? Here's my opinion, two years after installing the IKEA Pax system in our master closet.

Is a closet system worth it?  Read on to find out what I think!

A couple of years ago, I decided to start slowly making my way through my house, and redecorating it to suit more of my taste.  (You can read all about what brought me to this decision here.)

One of the first rooms on my list was the master closet.  This may seem like a somewhat odd choice, but I had a couple of reasons for it.  Number 1, I had just found out I was pregnant with our second child, and I knew I couldn’t take on a room like the kitchen in addition to preparations for baby.  Number 2, the master closet gets a lot of use every. single. day.  And closets are notorious for becoming unorganized black holes.  I love having an organized home, so it just made sense to get such a frequently used space whipped into shape.

So, was it worth it?

Absolutely.

After much research, I settled on the IKEA Pax system for the closet.  It was more affordable than some other systems out there, and it had all of the extra features I was looking for.

My husband and I transformed our closet – gutted, painted, and installed the closet system – in just a few days, all while I was about 10.5 weeks pregnant!  Not that I recommend doing that, but it really was fairly simple, and don’t worry, I let him do all the heavy lifting.  ðŸ™‚

We actually gained a ton of storage space by installing this system, which was fabulous.  Who doesn’t love having more storage space?!  And the best part is, two years down the road, and it is still neat and organized.

When you have a system like this in place, it makes organization easy.  I actually snapped these photos in about 15 minutes, while my son was napping and my daughter was playing.  So, this really is how it looks most of the time.  We have a place for everything, which I love.

Scarves/ties – I love this pull out rack.  I have one for scarves and my husband has one for ties.

Clothes and hampers (duh.) – As I stated earlier, we gained a ton of space by installing this system.  We were even able to eliminate a piece of furniture from our bedroom!

Shoes – My shoes are in the rack on the left.  I also have boots stored in a couple of the drawers towards the back of the closet.  My husband has his shoes in pull out drawers on the opposite side of the closet.

And the bins on the top shelves provide extra storage for things we don’t need access to all that often.

This system is totally adjustable, so you can make the shelves as high or low as you want.  I can actually pull the top bins down, and replace them, without having to stand on a chair.  And I’m only 5′ 3″!

So, if you are debating a closet system to help you organize your space, I say definitely go for it!  We love the IKEA Pax system, and I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

However, if you are a fairly handy type and don’t want to spend the money, I have some blogger friends who recently shared their plans for DIY closet systems.  You can check those out here.

    1. I don’t think you need a walk-in closet in order to install a closet system. I’m sure you could find one for just about any size closet. They are so nice, you should look into it!! Thanks for taking a look!

  1. Thanks for the inspiration. When we built our house (20+ years ago) we installed closet organization in all the closets. It is a huge help, but after this much time, I need inspiration to go through and “pretty” things up!

    1. They definitely are helpful for keeping things organized. And I will admit, I do love the pretty items, such as the rug and light fixture, as well. Thanks so much for the kind words!

  2. Amy if only I had a closet large enough to be worthy of a system. Mine is tiny but I managed to pare down my wardrobe so it all fits. You did a fantastic job considering you were pregnant at the time. I would have been in bed the whole time.

    1. Good for you for paring down your wardrobe. I sometimes have a hard time with that, and believe it or not, my husband is even worse! Ha! 😉 And I spent way more time in bed during my first pregnancy than I did with my second.

  3. I’ve been working on plans, but I can’t do our closet by myself, so I have to wait for help. Hopefully it will get done before the summer is over! Glad to know it is worth it!!

    1. Yes, definitely get help! I could not have done ours alone, even though it was fairly easy. Good luck with your plans, and I hope you are able to get it done soon. We love our organized closet!

  4. I would give my left………… something 😉 to have a space for something like this Amy and my hubby would too 😀 We still have those closets, not “walk ins” that we share. And I have the lion’s share. Poor hubby has a shelf and one rack to hang his clothes. I feel so guilty. Love your closet system

    1. Yes, we love our walk-in closet. You could totally do a closet system within a non-walk-in, as well. Maybe it would provide your hubby and little more storage space. 😉
